| Goal: |
| To develop a comprehensive waste reduction program by preventing waste before it occurs, and by reducing waste through reuse and recycling. |
| |
| Reduce and Reuse: |
|
Preventing waste is the easiest and most efficient way to reduce disposal costs and increase the capacity of our landfills. |
| |
| Recycling is the reprocessing of materials into new products. Recycling generally prevents the waste of potentially useful materials, reduces the consumption of raw materials and reduces energy usage, and hence greenhouse gas emissions, compared to virgin production. |

Recyclable materials, also called "recyclables", may originate from a wide range of sources including the home and industry. They include glass, paper, aluminum, asphalt, iron, textiles and plastics. Biodegradable waste, such as food waste or garden waste, is also recyclable with the assistance of micro-organisms through composting or anaerobic digestion. |

Unique Refurbishing Program
Each time we sell a new vending machine of any kind, we more often than not end up in possession of the old machine.
Why waste it? In today's economy and in the 21st century when it is too easy to throw away and exchange old for new, we believe in refurbishment. We utilize and recycle as many as 80% of our vending and Coffee equipment each year - indeed significantly more than most. So we make 'old' and 'not so old' 'as good as new'! |

Reverse Vending |
|
Envipco Can and Bottle Recycling Machines
Envipco is a world leader in the development and operation of automated technological systems for the recovery of used beverage containers for recycling. We build and operate reverse vending machines which identify and account for every container returned by the consumer. |
| |
| |
What is Reverse Vending? |
| |
ENVIPCO is long recognized as the industry leader in the field of reverse vending. The reverse vending machine was invented by Bruce DeWoolfson, ENVIPCO's founder. Reverse vending equipment automates beverage container recycling by accepting containers directly from the consumer, accounting for each container processed, and refunding the deposit to the consumer. |
| |
| |
Benefits of using Reverse Vending Systems |
|
For Retailers:
- Beverage industry studies have shown that reverse vending is less expensive compared to the cost of manual, primarily because of space and labor savings.
- Reverse vending alleviates the sanitation problems associated with storing empty containers in open storage bins.
- Empty containers do not have to be manually accepted and sorted by store personnel because they are sorted and accounted for automatically by the Envipco RVM machine.
Reverse vending offers convenience to the retailers' customers and builds traffic. Retail customers are more inclined to shop at supermarkets with recycling centers, especially if they can recycle with automated equipment they find to be reliable, convenient, accurate and fast. |

Waste to Energy Programs - Wheelabrator
Wheelabrator is a renewable energy generating company that produces clean energy using waste fuels. We value our customers and employees and operate all of our facilities in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. Wheelabrator's independent power plants generate electricity using a variety of fuels including waste wood, tires, waste coal, and natural gas. In addition to producing electricity, some of these facilities also produce steam that is sold to nearby government or commercial establishments. Click here to see how it works! |

Onsite Client Recycling Centers - Introducing Commingled Recycling |
| |
|
| |
Canteen and Highland Estates Coffee Traders is introducing a new and improved recycling program for our clients called Commingled Recycling. Commingled Recycling is easy, and accepts a wide range of materials. Recycling reduces the amount of garbage you put out for collection... which may help reduce your garbage costs!
Why Commingled Recycling? Research shows participation and recycling levels increase when sorting is not required. Commingled recycling is more efficient because collection trucks can hold more materials in a single load. New recycling technology allows materials to be sorted at a central location.
Yes You Can Recycle….Beverage Containers (Glass, Aluminum, Plastic)
Recycling is the reprocessing of old materials into new products, with the aims of preventing the waste of potentially useful materials, reducing the consumption of fresh raw materials and reducing energy usage, and thereby lowering greenhouse gas emissions compared to virgin production. Recycling is a key concept of modern waste management and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy, though colloquial usage of "recycling" can also include "reuse".
Highland Estates Coffee Trades has made a commitment to work with our clients to recycle the cans and bottles consumed on site. We will work with local not profit organizations and donate the bottles and cans collected. Please talk with your Highland Estates representatives about this new program. |

Office Recycling Programs |
|
Make double-sided copies. Be sure employees know how to make them on your copiers. Require contractors to submit double-sided bid documents.
- Where practical, work with your suppliers, vendors and business partners to reduce disposable packaging.
- Replace disposable products. Use coffee mugs, cutlery and crockery in place of paper and plastic items. Wherever you can, substitute reusable products for single-use products such as paper towels.
- Use rechargeable batteries.
- Use rechargeable toner cartridges in your printers. It's easy and cost-effective to return used cartridges.
- Consider replacing your fax machine with a plain paper model—traditional thermal fax paper is not readily recyclable.
- Reuse single-sided paper. Have it made into note pads or use it for copy drafts.
- Reuse manila envelopes to route internal mail. Reuse file folders, envelopes and boxes.
- Excess packaging costs money, so work with suppliers and your customers to use minimal, reusable or returnable packaging.
- Reuse packaging containers, polystyrene packaging "peanuts" and bags.
- Centralize your file cabinets. Instead of having many duplicate paper files throughout your organization, store them in one place. Reduce the number of telephone and other directories distributed.
- Donate obsolete equipment and furniture to charitable organizations instead of throwing them away.
- To cut down on subscriptions and multiple copies, get one subscription and circulate the magazine or newspaper to various departments. Route or post memos, too.
- Move toward a "paperless office" by using technology: Store computer documents on diskette instead of making paper copies. Use voice mail or electronic mail instead of paper memos. Use fax/modems to fax and
receive documents by computer. Use optical scanners and computers for file storage.
Next, set up convenient collection sites to gather materials for easy recycling:
- Have containers for used paper at every work station.
- Place high-volume containers for paper near printers, copiers, in mail rooms and print shops.
- Put separate bins for newspapers, glass, magazines, cardboard and cans in kitchen areas, lunchrooms or other central locations.
- Place containers for recyclable materials in shops, plants, factories, packaging departments, warehouses and other areas of operation.
- Return trimmings and overruns to the manufacturing process whenever possible.
